Kid Safe Search Engines

Here are a few of the leading software packages that you can use to monitor and control your child's activities.

  • The Alta Vista Family Filter
Normally when you use Alta Vista, the Family filter is off. To turn it on, click on link that says "Family Filter is off", which you'll find in the top right corner of the yellow field with the search box
  • Yahooligans!
While the Yahoo! search engine has lots of web sites that you don't want your kids to see, the company also provides a separate search engine/directory for kids.
  • Lycos Parental Controls
The link to Lycos parental controls is right near the top of the Lycos search page, directly below the search field. You can filter out based on violent, racial, hate, weapons or sex -- or you can disable access to Lycos Chat, email and message boards (which are uncontrolable). You'll also get a password which will effectively keep your children from overriding your controls.
  • Ask Jeeves For Kids Google SafeSearch
To turn on Google's SafeSearch feature, go to preferences, which you'll find to the right of the search field. Then select "Use SafeSearch to filter my results". The link from our page here goes straight to the preferences.
  • AllTheWeb
A new entry into the search engine race, AllTheWeb can also filter your results. On the main page, click "Customize". Then select "Filter" from the menu that appears at the top of the next page. Then turn "offensive content reduction" on.
